Today is exactly 62yrs Salifu Dagarti took a bullet for Kwame Nkrumah,

Today, marks 62 years since one of the bravest acts in Ghana’s political history.
On this very day in 1964, at the forecourt of Flagstaff House (now Jubilee House), an assassination attempt was made on Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. As the President walked toward his office, a police constable, Seth Ametewee, suddenly opened fire.
In that split second, one man did not think of his own life.
Salifu Dagarti, a British-trained Ghanaian police officer and presidential bodyguard, instantly stepped forward and shielded Nkrumah with his own body. Bullets meant for the President struck Dagarti instead. One hit him in the head, killing him instantly.
His sacrifice bought precious seconds.
Those seconds saved a president.
Those seconds changed Ghana’s history.
Because of Dagarti’s courage, Nkrumah was able to escape, take cover, and eventually overpower the assassin in a nearby kitchen.
Salifu Dagarti was born around July 1931.He joined the Gold Coast Police at just 17 years old and rose through dedication and discipline to become a Chief Superintendent by 1960.
Today, his name may only live on through a street in Tema Community 2, but his legacy is far bigger than any monument.
Salifu Dagarti represents ultimate loyalty, selfless service, and professional devotion. He is a reminder that Ghana’s history was shaped not only by leaders, but by brave men willing to give their lives so the nation could move forward.
🇬🇭 Lest we forget a true Ghanaian hero.k
